Columbia Sportswear

Columbia Sportswear has been in business since 1938. It is a company with solid financial results, great design and outstanding employees. Columbia Sportswear has delivered on its goal of creating and providing innovative, desirable and performing products to their customers.

Columbia Sportswear had been running their business on the same legacy ERP platform for 17 years. The outdated system resulted in business issues around operational competitiveness, customer service and efficiency regarding data, processes and decision making. The legacy ERP did not keep up with the company growth and did not adhere to industry best practices.

Columbia Sportswear undertook the largest business transformation initiative in company history. The Global Business Transformation (GBT) Program was launched to transform systems and processes to support future business growth and remain competitive. The overall goal of the program was to achieve operational excellence from a supply chain, financial, and go-to-market perspective positively impacting processes, systems and how people get work done. Achieving operational excellence ensures Columbia Sportswear's infrastructure is positioned to support future growth via brands, geographies, and business models.

Columbia Sportswear engaged Zethos Consulting to come in and lead the GBT program in the fall of 2012. Columbia Sportswear had already implemented the pilot release of the SAP Apparel and Footwear (AFS) solution in April 2012 supporting the company's Canadian region. The pilot release had encountered several challenges including: lack of integration across business processes and systems, lack of reporting, and minimal business engagement and ownership. Zethos was brought on to address these challenges and create a new template and methodology to bring Columbia Sportswear's entire North American business live on a standard set of GBT Processes and systems, including retrofitting Canada.

Zethos Consulting was responsible for the delivery of GBT Release 2 supporting the North American business as well as leading both the Project Management Office and Organizational Change Management functions. The scope of the GBT Program included 11 integrated projects with SAP AFS being the most visible. It also required significant change to Columbia Sportswear's business processes and policies.

Zethos brought strong project methodology; which included implementing strong portfolio management, creating iterative development and testing cycles, and ensuring the project was business-led by engaging executives, business process owners and super users through the entire project life cycle.

GBT Release 2 went live successfully in April 2014. The business ramp-up exceeded expectations and the program was declared stable less than 45 days after go-live. The North American business results have already shown positive impacts resulting from GBT including improved inventory turns and higher gross margins in 2014.
